Prime Minister Narendra Modi is angry! Infrastructure is one of the key focus areas of the Modi government, and road and highways development has been one of its pet projects. But now it seems that the National Highway-24 (NH-24) expansion project has hit hurdles and PM Modi is fuming over its slow progress. According to a TOI report, PM Modi has even gone to the extent of stating that he should only be asked to lay the foundation stone of a project if it is ready for rollout!
The NH-24 road connects Delhi to extended suburbs in Uttar Pradesh. The high-profile expansion project in poll-bound UP is aimed at easing commuter woes. The idea is to reduce the on road time between Delhi to Meerut to just 45 minutes as against the several hours right now. Once the NH-24 project is complete it would greatly reduce the traffic congestion for people who travel between Delhi and Ghaziabad, Indirapuram and even some sectors of Noida.
PM Modi has reportedly pulled up the infrastructure project agencies for their slow work. Modi had laid the foundation stone for Delhi-Hapur NH-24 in December last year. While project agencies have cited need for nod from the National Green Tribunal (NGT) among other reasons, PM Modi has questioned whether they were unaware of these hurdles before inviting him to lay the foundation stone.
In December last year, PM Modi laid the foundation stone for the Delhi-Meerut Expressway. The project proposes construction of total four stretches, including Nizamuddin bridge to UP border, UP border to Dasna and Dasna to Hapur. The entire project will involve construction of 74 Km long Delhi-Dasna-Meerut 14 lane Expressway and upgradation of 22 Km long Dasna-Hapur section of NH-24. The total project cost is estimated at Rs 7,566 crore and includes the following; DME Phase-I – construction of 28 km long 14 lane Delhi-Dasna section of Delhi-Meerut Expressway, costing Rs 2,869 crore; DME Phase II – construction of 46 km long, 6 lane Dasna-Meerut section of Delhi-Meerut Expressway, costing Rs 3,575 crore; and 6-laning of 22 km long Dasna-Hapur section of NH-24 costing Rs 1,122 crore.
