Narendra Modi Cabinet decisions: From Army, GST, cars and more, here are the top proposals cleared today

The Cabinet today cleared 65 recommendations of the Shekatkar committee, which was asked to make recommendations for enhancing combat capability and balancing defence expenditure.

The Cabinet today cleared 65 recommendations of the Shekatkar committee, which was asked to make recommendations for enhancing combat capability and balancing defence expenditure. Speaking to reporters,  Union Minister Arun Jaitley said that out f 92 recommendations by the committee, 65 were approved yesterday, ANI said. “This will lead to a redeployment of 57,000 officers/JCOs/ORs for various other functions in #IndianArmy,” the agency quoted the minister as saying.

In its meeting today, the cabinet also approved promulgation of an ordinance to suitably amend GST (Compensation to State) Act, 2017. This would allow raising the maximum rate at which the Compensation  Cess can be levied, from 15 percent to 25 percent, the report added.

On whether prices of cars will be affected, the minister said that it is up to the GST Council to decide on whether it wants to increase the quantum of cap from 15 percent to 25 percent, with regard to two categories of vehicles. “There are 12 different categories of automobiles, of which two are affected by today’s Cabinet decision on cess”, he added as per ANI.

The cabinet has also decided that two commemorative postage stamps would be issued jointly by India and Canada on the theme Diwali, it added. It has also approved MoUs between Election Commission of India and Election Management Bodies of other nations and International agencies, the agency said.

In its meeting today, the Union cabinet has also cleared the MoU between  India and Brazil cooperation in Zebu Cattle Genomics  as well as the MoU between India and Myanmar for the conservation of earthquake-damaged pagodas at Bagan in the neighbouring country, ANI added.
