With an estimated saving of Rs 1.8 lakh crore through various means under the Ujwal Discom Assurance Yojana (UDAY), the government envisages that most state-owned distribution companies will stop making losses from FY19, reports fe Bureau in New Delhi. The new plan comes at a time when state electricity boards in the country are believed to have incurred losses of Rs 60,000 crore for FY15, taking their accumulated losses to Rs 3.8 lakh crore.

Implementation of UDAY, helped by the Centre’s generous financial help to cut the SEBs’ aggregate technical and commercial losses and relaxations of coal linkage policy, is also expected to reduce in the medium-term the banks’ bad debts — which stand at R4.5 lakh crore — although they will have to cope with lower interest income in the near-term.
