The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) on Thursday announced that it has approved the appointment of Gurdeep Singh, currently serving as the managing director of Gujarat State Electricity Corporation (GSECL), as chairman & managing director of the state-run National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) for a period of five years from the date of assumption of charge of the post. The appointment date has not yet been decided for the incumbent.
Singh, a mechanical engineer by training, has over 26 years of experience in power generation sector. He started his career with NTPC and has worked at various levels both in the Indian and multi-national companies, namely Powergen, CLP and AES. Singh’s experience spans different areas of the sector including business development, projects and operations.
Prior to joining GSECL, Singh was the president of the power division at the Kolkata-based Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation. Last year, the government had decided to constitute a search committee to find a new CMD for the largest thermal power producer of the country after the term of its then chief, Arup Roy Choudhury, expired at the end of August. The search panel received over 100 applications for the post which included a healthy representation from the private power companies.
