In a landmark move, government today approved induction of women fighter pilots in the Indian Air Force, the first time when women would be in combat role in the country’s armed forces.

The first women fighter pilots would be selected from the batch which is presently undergoing training at the Air Force Academy, the Defence Ministry said in a statement.

“This progressive step is in keeping with the aspirations of Indian women and is in line with contemporary trends in armed forces of developed nations,” the Ministry said.

It said that the performance of women, inducted into transport and helicopter streams of the IAF, has been “praiseworthy” and at par with their male colleagues.

Defence Minister is visiting USA. India should not sucb to US Pressure to buy their weapon systems. In fact the Defence Ministry should have inducted LCH before finalisation to buy Helicopters from the US company, Boeing. The US Helicopters being procured is no way better than LCH for Indian conditions. Moreover, the prices are abnormally high. Why are we not exporting ALH Dhruv. One important issue is that Defence Ministry should not procure any foreign aircraft till LCA, Tejas is inducted in IAF. This provides us bargaining power. Manufacturing of Defence hardwares can not improve unless twenty percent of Defence PSU shares are disinvested. We should not forget that almost everyday farmers are committing suicide. Let us hope the Defence Ministry will take its first positive action in the interest of India.
