Subscriber additions by the telecom operators fell for the second consecutive month in May this year with the companies adding 2.27 million subscribers during the month.
However, on the brighter side, subscriber additions for May fell 19% compared to April, when operators added 2.8 million subscribers. The decline in May is less steeper when comparing the fall in April as against March. The additions in April fell by 51% against 5.68 million added in March 2017.
Collectively, the top three operators — Bharti, Vodafone and Idea — added 3.43 million subscribers in May, a drop of 20% compared to 4.29 million added in April. But here also the rate of decline has come down. Additions in April had fallen by 38% compared to 6.93 million subscribers added in March 2017.
As of May, Bharti is the country’s largest telecom operator with a base of 278.60 million subscribers followed by Vodafone at 210.95 million and Idea at 196.24 million subscribers. Bharti had a subscriber market share of 29.63% followed by Vodafone at 22.43% and Idea at 20.87% as of last month.

COAI did not provide user numbers for the new entrant Reliance Jio for May. It said that as per Trai’s April 2017 data, Jio has 112.55 million subscribers. As per Trai, Jio has a subscriber-based market share of 9.58%.
