New Delhi:: With the number of students enrolling for science subjects showing a marked decline, the Centre has earmarked Rs 85 crore for an ambitious programme to attract young talents to a career in science.
Aptly named INSPIRE, or Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research, the programme launched by the Science and Technology Ministry seeks to groom meritorious science students from Class XII onwards, offering them handsome scholarships at every stage of their career.
They would be encouraged to continue their study in science and offered attractive jobs in leading research institutes of the country. “INSPIRE is a very laudable programme keeping in mind the long-term objectives of making the country a leader in science and scientific research and development,” said Science and Technology Minister Kapil Sibal.“I am therefore very happy to see that the Finance Minister has allocated adequate funds to make the programme a success,” he said.
Finance Minister P Chidambaram also increased the allocation for multi-disciplinary research in frontier areas from about Rs 370 crore last year to 415 crore. The overall spending in science, technology and environment has increased significantly from Rs 7,742 crore to Rs 9,283 crore.
The National Mission on Nanotechnology, a grand programme launched by the Prime Minister last year to propel research in the cutting edge area of nanoscience, has been given Rs 145 crore for this year. The five-year programme, worth Rs 1,000 crore, seeks mainly to enhance capacity building in this emerging field. Allocations for the Department of Space have also been increased from Rs 2,831 crore to Rs 3,600 crore.
