Volvo India Private Limited (VIPL) on Friday said it will launch diesel hybrid buses in India early next month. Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport (NMMT) will be the first customer, the company said.

“We are currently in the process of completing homologation of diesel hybrid bus and awaiting certification from Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI). We expect to get the certificate very soon and supply the first batch of five buses to NMMT within the next two weeks,” VRV Sriprasad, Business Head for Volvo Buses India & south Asia told the FE.

He said the company has secured orders from NMMT for five hybrid buses, which are manufactured at the company's manufacturing plant at Hoskote near Bengaluru. The company imports chassis and assembles in Bengaluru, he said. Volvo Buses is also in talks with other state run transport corporations in Karnataka, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu for hybrid buses.
