German carmaker Volkswagen is likely to recall around 100,000 diesel cars in India which have been fitted with faulty imported engines and are also violating emission norms.

When contacted, a Volkswagen spokesperson said, “Investigations are underway at the headquarters in Germany as well as in India to find out if cars sold with the EA 189 engines are impacted due to the software or not, in the Indian context. VW India is waiting for results, will communicate further after the results are out.” The official, declined to comment further.

Earlier this month Volkswagen had admitted to cheating in emissions norms and said there was an impact on 11 million vehicles globally. In India the company not only agreed to cooperate with government authorities, as well ARAI, the testing agency, in finding faults with cars sold in India but also recalled close to 390 Polos earlier this month for inspection and precautionary repair of the handbrake. The scandal has pushed Volkswagen to report its first quarterly loss in at least 15 years globally, forcing out its long-time chief executive and sent shockwaves through the global car industry. According to sources, models such as Vento, Passat, Jetta and Polo fitted with imported engines apart from 20,000 locally made cars are expected to be recalled in India.

Vehicle testing agency ARAI, which is examining the global phenomenon on company’s Indian cars, is expected to submit its report to the union ministry of heavy industry in the next few days, sources here pointed out.

The union government had earlier asked ARAI to examine and submit a detailed report on any ‘defeat software’ used to fudge data. Investigation is being initiated into EA 189 (1.2-litre, 1.5-litre, 1.6-litre, and 2.0-litre) TDI engines which have the defeat device software installed, is in application across the Volkswagen cars in India, sources pointed out.
