Maruti Suzuki India that unveiled the Ingis concept at the Auto Expo 2016, is planning to launch the production-model of the compact crossover sometime in the second half of this calendar year. Since the Ignis concept looks almost production-ready, it should not take much time for Maruti Suzuki India to finally launch it. Unlike the Maruti Vitara Brezza which will be sold through regular Maruti dealerships, the Ignis will be sold via the company's premium dealership range Nexa. And despite being a slightly more up-market product than other compact crossovers in the country, the Ignis is likely to carry an aggressive price tag to attract masses.
The Maruti Suzuki Ignis is developed on the company's new-generation platform which was also put on display at MSI's pavilion at the Auto Expo 2016. The same platform also underpins the Baleno, and is claimed to be stiffer yet lighter than the platforms of other Maruti Suzuki cars in India.
The Maruti Suzuki Ignis features single-slat chrome grille, projector head-lights with LED strips, fog lights with chrome surrounds, multi-spoke alloy wheels in black, body-coloured outside rear view mirrors, rear mounted spoiler and few other interesting elements.
Since the Ignis will target buyers looking for an entry-level premium crossover, its dimensions are kept accordingly. It measures 3700 in length, 1595mm in height, 1660mm in width and has a wheelbase of 2435mm. The ground clearance of 180mm will ensure that it can handle all sorts of city and highway terrains with ease.
The vehicle displayed at the Auto Expo had several safety features including anti-lock braking system (ABS), electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD), driver & passenger airbags and few others. Though there is no official word yet on its engine options, we expect the India-bound Maruti Suzuki Ignis to come with a 1.2-litre K-series petrol and a 1.3-litre DDiS 190 diesel powertrain.
