At the Auto Expo this year, there was a little something for Bollywood fanatics, too. A dedicated display of vehicles that featured in some of the most iconic cinematic names through the past few decades was put up that attracted a healthy footfall. Here's what was on display:
Bobby — 1973: The motorcycle that became a household name and is still fondly remembered as ‘Bobby’ was originally called the Rajdoot GTS. ‘GTS stood for Grand Touring Sports’. While the bike on display at the 2016 Auto Expo wasn't the same vehicle used by Rishi Kapoor (Raj) to get Dimple Kapadia (Bobby) out of trouble in the movie Bobby from 1973 (Image Source: YouTube)
Sholay — 1975: Sholay — a movie that has been carved into the difficult pages of history books and features on every big cinema personality’s list of best effort in the Indian cinematic world. A motorcycle similar to the 1954 Ariel 350 displayed at the Auto Expo was used in the movie in the most memorable song sequences of all time — ‘Yeh dosti…’ (Image Source: YouTube)
Dhoom — 2004 Suzuki’s Hayabusa became the talk of the town when the movie Dhoom released in 2004. John Abraham (Kabir) used a bike quite similar to this one to defeat Abhishek Bachchan (Jai Dixit) in a chase sequence. (Image Source: YouTube)
Akayla — 1991: ‘Raam Pyari’ from the movie Akayla wasn't a human character — it was a cute little Volkswagen Beetle of the mid 1960s similar to the one at display at the 2016 Auto Expo. This Ramesh Sippy film might not have done brilliantly at the box office, but it did give the world an affable combination of ‘Raam Pyari' and Amitabh Bachchan. Epic combination! Deewar — 1975 One of the most powerful performances by Amitabh Bachchan, Deewar made him earn the tag of ‘angry young man’. A Volkswagen Kombi van very similar to the one displayed here was used in the movie(Image Source: YouTube)
Mere Jeevan Saathi — 1972 Rajesh Khanna was a mega star in his time and the car he was driving in the movie became quite a big talk-point for cinema goers. The 1965 Fiat Spyder shown here was the actual car that Rajesh Khanna used in the movie, and the famous song ‘Chala jaata hoon…’ featured him behind the wheel of it. (Image Source: YouTube)
