BMW will unveil the new 8-Series coupe globally at the Concorso D’Eleganze Villa d’Est in Italy. Just ahead of its official unveil, the images of the car has been leaked revealing its design and features. The car will be showcased as a concept model and will be officially introduced in the second quarter of 2018.
Engine and Transmission: The production-ready BMW 8-Series is likely to be powered by a 3.0 litre inline, six-cylinder, a 4.4 litre V8 and a 6.6 litre V12 engines that will power the entry level 840i, 850i and the M860i xDrive variants, respectively. The V12 engine also powers the M760Li xDrive version on the 7 Series. There is also a possibility of an 840e plug-in hybrid model that will get its power from the petrol-electric engine as seen in the 740e iPerformance in international markets. All versions will get a standard eight-speed automatic transmission
Exterior and Design: The BMW 8-Series has a two-door layout and the German carmaker hasn't shyed away from experimenting with an aggressive silhouette while keeping the signature design language intact. The exterior of the 8-Series has been designed by John Buckingham at BMW's Design Works studio in California. The car gets long hood, floating roofline, signature kidney grille finished in chrome and flared front wheel arches. Like the front, the boffins at BMW have continued with the aggressive appeal of the car which includes large exhaust finishers and 21-inch alloy wheels. The OLED L-shaped tail lamps as well as the slim laser projector headlamps add to the aggressive character.
Interior and Features: The interior has received a digital instrument cluster with driver information system, a squarish steering wheel with controls and buttons. The centre panel features dual-tone leather upholstery with contrast stitching as well as carbon fibre treatment. The car also features carbon fibre shell sport seats, polished aluminum inserts and Swarovski glass for the rotary controller as well as iDrive controller that add more luxurious elements to the car.
Competition and Launch: The BMW 8 Series coupe will compete with the likes of the Mercedes-AMG S Class coupe, Aston Martin DB11 and the Bentley Continental GT in international markets. BMW will launch the production model of the 8-Series in 2018.
