Since the rise in demand of 'sporty looking' versions, particularly in the premium hatchback segment, a number of carmakers have started to offer their standard models with some cosmetic changes. Some manufacturers have also tinkered with the mechanicals or changed the engine altogether. The most recent in this category is the launch of the Polo GT TSI and GT TDI Sport variants priced at Rs 9.71 lakh and Rs 9.81 lakh, ex-showroom, Mumbai. The company will put the Sport trims on sale for the next three months and if the sales figures are satisfactory, the company will extend this for longer.

The changes on the new variants include 16-inch alloy wheels, GT Sport decals on each side, GT embossed leather seats and black coloured spoiler as well as the roof. Powering the Polo GT TSI and GT TDI Sport editions are the same set of 1.2-litre petrol and 1.5-litre diesel motors. The diesel engine is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission while the petrol engine is offered with a 7-speed DSG automatic gearbox. The petrol unit generates 104 hp of power and the diesel engine produces 109 hp of power. The new variants are available in two colour options, Flash Red and Candy White.

In terms of safety, the GT TSI and GT TDI Sport get ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) with EBD (Electronic Brakeforce Distribution) and dual front airbags as standard. The petrol variant also gets traction control (Electronic Stability Programme) and Hill Hold Control. The company recently added LED headlamp units to the Polo GT twins and have been aggressively pushing the hatchback variants. With the introduction of these limited edition variants, Volkswagen India will be competing with the recently launched Ford Figo S, however, the latter is priced much below and has a stiffer suspension setup.
