US Presidents and the cars they drive

A brief look at the cars owned by some of the past US Presidents.

With few hours left to the polls to elect the new 45th US President, Express Drives brings to you a sneak peek into the cars that some of the past US Presidents have owned. No, we aren't talking about the 'Beast', which ferries Barack Obama around. We're talking about the cars that are the personal belongings of these people before or during their tenure as the President.

George H.W Bush- 1947 Studebaker

George Herbert Walker Bush was the 43rd Vice President of the United States from 1981 to 1989 and the 41st President from 1989 to 1993. The car was introduced in June 1946 as a 1947 model at the Studebaker factory, Indiana. The Studebaker model was powered by a 'L' head six cylinder engine, which produced 94hp of power and was mated to a 3-speed manual gearbox. The car had a redesigned chassis and suspension in order to offer better comfort. Bush's 1947 Studebaker is presently on display at the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum.

Bill Clinton – 1967 Mustang Convertible

Bill Clinton was the 42nd President of the United States from 1993 to 2001. One of Clinton's prized possessions includes a 1967 Ford Mustang convertible. It was powered by a 6.4L, V8 engine which was designed to produce 320hp. He owned the Mustang while serving as the Governer of the Arkansas. As the President of the country is not allowed to drive a car, he had to leave back his Ford Mustang, while moving into the White House after being elected as the 42nd President of United States. The 1967 Mustang Convertible is now on display in The Museum of Automobiles in Morrilton, Arkansas.

George W Bush – Triumph TR4

George Walker Bush was the 43rd President of United States from 2001 to 2009. In his college days George Bush drove a Triumph TR-4, the two door roadster car that was built between 1965 to 1967 by Triumph Motor Company in the United Kingdom. The car was powered by a 2,138cc, 4-cylinder engine. Apart from this, George Bush is also reported to have owned a Lamborghini Aventador and Ford F-150.

Barack Obama – Ford Escape Hybrid

Barack Hussien Obama II is the 44th and current president of the United states. At the start of his tenure, Obama exchanged his Chrysler 300 for a Ford Escape Hybrid crossover SUV. The decision could've been a result of Obama's new responsibility, wherein he needed to reflect a rational and concerned thought process. And, what better way to do that than drive a hybrid cars, which are popular poster boys of green mobility. The SUV has a 2.9L, petrol, four-cylinder engine which produces 153 hp of power uses the Atkinson-Cycle combustion chamber process for better mileage. The new Hybrid trim level features a 16-inch aluminum alloy wheels, key less entry.
