After a lot of speculation Japanese automaker Toyota Kirloskar will be launching its Toyota Yaris sedan in India and at the ongoing Auto Expo 2018, the company also showcased and confirmed that car will make its India debut in the first half of 2018. Toyota already has three sedans in its portfolio starting with Toyota Etios, Toyota Corolla and the premium Toyota Camry Hybrid in India and with the Yaris, Toyota will fill in the gap between Etios and Corolla. There was a lot spoken in the media about Toyota Vios coming to India and while it is the same car the name in India will be called Yaris as known as in Singapore.
Toyota Yaris will sit in the mid-size sedan or executive sedan segment and take on the likes of Honda City, Hyundai Verna, Skoda Rapid and Volkswagen Vento. Many might argue that Toyota is late to enter this segment but data shows a constant YoY growth in this segment.
India bound Toyota Yaris will be available in both petrol and diesel engine. In terms of dimensions, the Yaris measures 4,425 mm in length which is shorter than the likes of Maruti Suzuki Ciaz and Honda City that measures 4490 mm and 4440 mm respectively. Toyota Yaris also has a shorter wheelbase than the competition but is as wide as Ciaz at 1730mm. The width of the sedan is enough to give ample space inside for a comfortable seating.
Toyota Yaris will be launched in India with a 1.5L petrol engine shedding a power of about 107 hp mated to 6-Speed manual transmission and will also get an optional 7-step CVT. Reports also suggest that Toyota might bring in a hybrid version in the near future but no official statement by Toyota Kirloskar on that. If Toyota Yaris gets a petrol variant then it would be the most affordable full-hybrid sedan in the country. Expect Toyota Yaris to gets premium interiors finished in black-beige along with neatly laid out dash. Expect it to get a touchscreen infotainment system that supports navigation and phone connectivity and also segment first features like gesture control, tyre-pressure monitoring system.
Safety features like dual airbags and ABS along with rear parking sensor would be standard across all variants. Top features of Toyota Yaris would also feature 7 airbags, Hill-start assist, ESP etc.
