The iconic America SUV maker, Jeep is celebrating its 75th year across the world. Coinciding with this occasion, the SUV maker will launch three products in the Indian car market, namely; Grand Cherokee, Wrangler Unlimited and the high-performance Grand Cherokee SRT.

The iconic America SUV maker, Jeep is celebrating its 75th year across the world. Coinciding with this occasion, the SUV maker will launch three products in the Indian car market, namely; Grand Cherokee, Wrangler Unlimited and the high-performance Grand Cherokee SRT. Jeep was the first SUV manufacturer to offer its vehicles with the lightweight four-wheel drive system during the World War II for the US military. The first prototype was the Bantam BRC, while the first model to be produced was the Willy MB Jeep in 1941. Later, the company produced more four-wheel drive SUVs for the masses in 1945.

Jeep is owned by the FCA (Fiat, Chrysler Automobiles) and will mark its presence on the Indian soil by launching its models on 30th August 2016. The Grand Cherokee and the Wrangler Unlimited were earlier showcased at the 2016 Auto Expo and the company will open bookings of the SUVs on 30th August 2016.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is powered by a 3.0 L, V6, diesel engine that produces 237 hp and 549 Nm of maximum power and torque. The SUV delivers a claimed fuel-efficiency of 12.8 km/l. The engine is mated to an 8-speed paddle-shift automatic transmission, which will send its power to the QuadraDrive II 4WD system with rear Electronic Limited Slip Differential.

On the safety front, the Grand Cherokee is offered with standard features such as driver and front-passenger airbags along with side curtain airbags. The ParkView Rear Back-Up Camera with the ParkSense Front and Rear Park Assist System, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Electronic Roll Mitigation (ERM), Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), Brake Assist, All-Speed Traction Control and Trailer Sway Control (TSC) are also offered on the safety list.

Besides this, the SUV has two trims - Summit and Limited and features auto-dimming mirrors, infotainment system with connectivity technology, roof rails and wraparound LED tail lamps. Expected to be priced between Rs 40 to Rs. 55 lakh, ex- showroom, the car will compete with the likes of BMW X5, Audi Q7, Volvo XC90 and Mercedes-Benz GLE.

The Grand Cherokee SRT is equipped with a powerful engine and performance-oriented technologies. The SRT looks aggressive and bolder than the standard Cherokee model with a bigger front bumper, fog lamps with LED lights and chrome finished air-vents. What makes the SRT unique is its engine. Under the hood, the SUV gets a 6.4 L, HEMI, V8, engine that develops 470 hp of maximum power. The engine is paired to an 8-speed paddle-shift automatic transmission, that sends its power to the Quadra-Trac Active On Demand 4WD system. With the help of this drivetrain, the SRT benefits from torque distribution evenly to all wheels, while the Selec-Track traction control system further helps in transferring the torque to the wheels with traction.

The Grand Cherokee SRT is equipped with 20-inch “Goliath” polished aluminum wheels wrapped in 295/45ZR20 tyres. The SUV is offered with a Brembo high-performance braking system to cope up with the extra power. The SRT is different from other models in the lineup as its gets Active Noise Control System, Instrument Cluster with Performance Display Screen, SRT Brushed Aluminum Pedals, all-black interior colour and 19 Harman Kardon Speakers with Subwoofer. The Grand Cherokee SRT is likely to be priced between Rs. 75 to Rs. 80 lakh, ex-showroom.

Jeep Wrangler Unlimited

The Wrangler Unlimited is offered in one variant which has a longer wheelbase of 2,947 mm. The car manufacturer will sell the Wrangler as a CBU unit. Powering the Wrangler is a 3.6 L, V6, diesel motor that generates 281 hp of power and 353 Nm of torque. The unit is mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission, the car is also equipped with Command-Trac Shift-on-the-Fly Part-Time 4WD system. The Wrangler Unlimited delivers a claim fuel-economy of 12.1 km/l.

The company is expected to price the Wrangler between Rs. 25 Rs. 35 lakh, ex-showroom. It is equipped with features like McKinley Black and McKinley Dark Saddle interior trims, Alpine Premium Sound System with a 6.5-inch touchscreen display and three different rooftop options - No Top, Soft Top and Hard Top. The SUV is offered in 6 body colours – Black, White, Silver, Granite, Red and Grey.
