Indian carmaker, Tata Motors is set to debut in the compact SUV/compact crossover segment with the launch of the Nexon this year. With the launch just around the corner, the Nexon's engine and gearbox options have been officially announced. The new model from Tata Motors would be offered with the 1.2-litre Revotron petrol engine that has been seen on the Tiago as well as the Tigor earlier. This unit would also be accompanied by a new 1.5-litre Revotorq diesel engine and both motors would be mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. Initially, there would be no automatic transmission option available on either of the engines. The 1.2 litre Revotron petrol engine would generate 108 hp of power at 3,750 rpm and 260 Nm of torque from 2,000 rpm to 4,000 rpm. The petrol motor has been retuned to produce more power and torque since in the Tiago, the 1.2-litre unit produces 84 hp of power and 114 Nm of torque. The 1.5 litre Revotorq diesel engine that has been developed in-house produces 108 hp of power and 260 Nm of torque. Both engines, particularly the diesel unit has been developed with inputs from AVL, Bosch, Mahle and Honeywell. Both engines will also have different driving modes, Eco, City and Sport which will be a first-in-segment feature.
Based on the Indian carmaker's Impact design language, the Nexon would feature projector headlamps with Daytime Running Lamps, alloy wheels, U-shaped tail lamps, roof rails, rear spoiler and a chrome finished front grille. These options, however, would be restricted to the higher variants in the interest of keeping an aggressive price tag. The higher trims of the Tata Nexon are also expected to get a touchscreen infotainment system supplied by Harman that would support Bluetooth connectivity, navigation and other functionalities present in the segment competitors. Automatic climate control, reverse parking camera with sensors and steering mounted audio as well as phone controls with voice commands would also be a part of the higher variants.
In terms of safety, the Tata Nexon would get ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) with EBD (Electronic Brakeforce Distribution), dual front airbags and ISOFIX. The company is yet to confirm is these would a standard fitment, however, it is expected to be as most of the segment rivals have these basic safety features as standard. Once launched, the Tata Nexon will compete with the likes of the Ford EcoSport and the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza. It is expected to be priced from Rs 6.5 lakh to Rs 8.5 lakh, ex-showroom in the country.
