Skoda Monte Carlo

It hasn't been long since Skoda Auto India launched the Rapid based Monte Carlo in India. And now, the sporty looking Monte Carlo seems to have hit rough waters. It came in August this year at a starting price tag of Rs 10.75 lakh and is available in petrol and diesel variants. A court has now barred Skoda from using Monte Carlo nameplate after a clothings brand based in Ludhiana claimed infringement of its trademark by the auto major, according to a Times of India report. Monte Carlo clothing line has been in India for a long time now and is a name recognisable by most. The additional district judge Mukesh Kumar explained the case as "crystal clear" and that the automotive brand had infringed the clothing company's trademark by launching their product under Monte Carlo name. The court passed a temporary injunction saying that "the plaintiff has a prima facie case on merit and balance of convenience also lies in its favour. The plaintiff would suffer irreparable loss if an injunction is not granted."

According to the court order, Skoda India, its principal officers, partners and distributors have been restrained from "advertising, manufacturing, selling and/or offering for sale, or permitting others to sell or offer for sale, directly or indirectly or dealing in any goods or services, whatsoever under the 'Monte Carlo' moniker."

In Skoda's defence, Monte Carlo versions of its cars are on sale in international markets, for example, the Fabia Monte Carlo is sold in the UK. The Monte Carlo models are highlighted with black elements, such as alloys, a panoramic sunroof, etc.

Skoda Monte Carlo is available in two petrol and two diesel variants. The petrol variants of the car are priced at Rs 10.75 – 11.75 lakh (Ex-Showroom) and the diesel Monte Carlo costs between Rs 12.46 – Rs 13.57 lakh (Ex-Showroom). The design on the Skoda Monte Carlo is inspired from the company’s heritage of motorsports and gets two select dual-colour options: flash red with black roof and candy white with black roof. The overall dimensions of Monte Carlo are same as that of the Rapid but get more muscle, aggressive lines and the crystalline appearance that resonates with the SKODA’s new design legacy that we have seen on the 2017 Skoda Octavia and will be seen on the upcoming Kodiaq SUV.
