Nissan India is looking at the growing performance hatchback segment with keen interest, said Guillaume Sicard, President, Nissan India Operations. As the Indian car market matures towards more powerful cars the company could launch a performance hatchback in India in an undisclosed duration of time. The car will compete with the likes of Maruti Suzuki Baleno RS and Volkswagen Polo GT, once launched, although Sicard did not confirm the car's positioning. Off late, cars in this segment have gained popularity in the market, especially among young buyers.

Nissan has a global lineup of hatchbacks that cover various segments and many of them are equipped with high-performance engines. We did not get any more details about this car but the car in question is expected to have an engine developing between 100 to 120 hp and could be priced under Rs 10 lakh. We don't expect this car to be a spruced up version of the existing Micra, which will continue to be sold in India for some time. The performance car could be the all-new Micra, which has been launched in international markets and continues to sell alongside the present Micra in many countries.

On the sidelines of the new Nissan Terrano's launch, Sicard confirmed that the company will launch eight new models by 2021. The next launch we can expect form the company in this year is the X-Trail Hybrid, which could be followed with the Leaf, an electric vehicle. Sicard, however, stated that the Leaf will only be launched to asses the Indian market in terms of viability for electric vehicles. The company will look at a different electric vehicle for India in the long-term.
