New Kia crossover spied, India launch possible by early 2019

The new Kia crossover will be based on the Kia Rio and will make its official debut in 2018 internationally.

The sub-compact SUV and crossover segment in India are getting popular with the launch of new models. Kia is also developing a new crossover, which has been spied testing and is expected to make its debut in the country in 2018. Before the crossover, Kia will first launch the hatchback Picanto in the Indian car market. Following this,the car might be launched in the Indian market too, given the popularity of such vehicles and similar positioning of the crossover. However, it might come to India only by end of 2018 or early 2019.

Talking about the new Kia crossover, the car has been spied in a camouflaged state in Sweden and will make its global debut in 2018, followed by the launch in international markets. Kia's new crossover is expected to be based on the new Kia Rio platform and will share features with the Rio largely.

The image of the crossover reveals that the company will equip the car with 17-inch alloy wheels, roof rails and wide C-pillars. The car manufacturer will also offer the new crossover with wrap around conventional headlamps, round fog lamps mounted on the front bumper and LED tail lamps. The car will also have a higher ground clearance than the Kia Rio.

There is no information about the what the carmaker will call the new model and the engine options, but the spied model has been christened as Stonic. The new Kia crossover is expected to be powered by the Rio's engine options, a 1.4 litre petrol and a 1.4 litre diesel engine. Kia might also offer the new crossover with the recently launched new 1.0 litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol in different states of tune - 99 hp and 118 hp of power. At a later stage, the company might also launch a plug-in hybrid version that will be borrowed from the Niro.
