Time and again Fiat Chrysler Automobile (FCA) has been facing criticism in India on its product portfolio, on the Jeep brand’s expensive price tag on their earlier brought CBU models but the company has been very loyal to the Indian market and to its customers despite low numbers in sales and losses faced over some time now. Jeep India has answered its critics and has gone for a killer pricing on made-in-India Jeep Compass SUV. Jeep Compass has been priced between Rs 14.95 – 20.69 lakh (Ex-showroom) in India. This is also the first Made-In-India SUV from the iconic Jeep brand and the Indian arm of FCA claims to have achieved a localisation of 65%. The company has invested $280 million in its Ranjangaon facility in Maharashtra that has allowed Jeep India to mobilize its localisation strategy. Major Indian suppliers like Magneti Marelli, Cooper Standard Automotive, GST/Seton Auto-Leather and many others have played a key role in supplying its auto-components for Jeep Compass. Made-in-India Jeep Compass will also be exported to all the right-hand-drive (RHD) nations like Australia, England, Japan etc and will be manufactured at the same Ranjangaon facility. FCA’s Indian plant started the preparation to roll-out the locally manufactured SUV in December 2016 by upgrading its assembly lines making it fit to roll-out the Jeep Compass SUV.
In fact, FCA India did not manufacture a single other product to carry out these operations, this indicates that the company was highly motivated to bring in this new product soon in India. FCA India has also worked upon improving its after-sales and services in India. Talking at the launch of Jeep Compass, Kevin Flynn, MD, FCA India said that the bookings of the Jeep Compass will multiply with these aggressive pricing. Currently, the company has received 5,000 bookings on its new SUV. Jeep Compass is available in three petrol and seven diesel variant (including optional variants). Jeep India has played well in terms of offering features like infotainment system from the base variant but in the top-trims it also supports Apple Car Play and Google Android Auto. On the safety front, dual front air-bags, ABS with EBD, hill-start assist, traction-control system are offered as standard features while the top-variants get six air-bags, four-driving modes and the diesel Compass SUV is also offered in 4X4 variant.
Globally, Jeep Compass is also being manufactured at FCA’s manufacturing sites in Mexico and China. Jeep’s Toluca plant in Mexico caters the Compass’s supply to the U.S and Canadian markets.
