Isuzu might launch the MU-X SUV in India later this year, suggests some unconfirmed reports. The company is yet to make an official statement on the matter. By logic, the likelihood of the MU-X coming to India seems strong since the MU-7, which has been around for a while, has failed to generate impressive numbers for the company. The recently launched D-Max pick-up although new to the market, hasn't shown any sparks of promise. This makes it essential for Isuzu to have a vehicle to replace the aging MU-7 and take the fight directly to Toyota Fortuner.
The MU-7, although spacious and large, didn't manage to attract too many consumers due to its dated design and questionable fit and finish. The MU-X on the other hand looks more modern, sharper and youthful and should find more acceptance than the MU-7, if priced competitively. Also, the MU-X is based on the same platform as the Chevrolet Trailblazer, the MU-X also carries similar interiors to the Trailblazer. The ladder-frame chassis-equipped vehicle is expected to be powered by the same 3.0 L, 160 hp diesel engine that propels the MU-7.
For a long time now, Toyota Fortuner has dominated the premium SUV space to the extent, it has never been challenged seriously. The new Ford Endeavour has managed to make its presence felt in the segment but not enough to give Toyota sleepless nights. Isuzu might not expect a radical turnaround with the MU-X but it surely should find more buyers than the MU-7, if priced well.
