Hyundai Kona spied without camouflage, India launch by late 2017

The India-bound Hyundai Kona will be based on the i20 hatchback platform and will share its design cues with the i20 Active model.

Hyundai is all set to launch a new compact SUV, the Kona soon and the production version of the car has been spied for a television commercial advertisement shoot in Lisbon. Hyundai has christened it the Kona, a name that takes inspiration the Hawaian islands, similar to others like Santa Fe, Creta, Tucson which are also named after famous holiday destinations. According to the new spy images, the Kona gets twin LED headlamps with DRLs (Daytime Running Lamps), the signature cascading front grille, black cladding, roof rails, alloy wheels and a dual paint scheme.

In international markets, the Hyundai Kona will be powered by a 1.0 litre turbocharged petrol, a 1.4 litre petrol engine and a 1.6 litre turbocharged diesel engine. The same engines also power the Hyundai i30. The carmaker might also offer the compact SUV with an optional AWD (All-Wheel Drive) system on higher versions. Interiors of the Kona will get touch screen infotainment system with steering mounted controls and an automatic climate control.


The India-bound Hyundai Kona will be based on the i20 hatchback platform and will share its design cues with the i20 Active model. The compact SUV/compact crossover will be positioned above the Creta and will compete with Toyota C-HR and Nissan Juke globally.  It is expected that the company will first launch the Kona in Europe and will be showcased at 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show to be in the month of September this year.
