First, what is an AMT and how it's different from Automatic Transmission?
AMT or Automated Manual transmission is a kind of a semi-automatic transmission system. The AMT is not built ground-up as an automatic gearbox but it is a manual transmission with an electro-hydraulic module that helps in gear changing without having to press the clutch. An AMT or automated transmission system comprises of two key components namely an electronic control unit and a hydraulic actuator system. The role of the electronic control unit is to engage and disengage the clutch during gear shifts. The AMT is cheaper than traditional AT gearboxes and hence is more suitable for a cost-conscious marlet such as India. For this reason, manufacturers are now being offering AMT even in their entry-level hatchbacks as well. While the term AMT is used widely, Maruti calls this technology as AGS or Auto Gear Shift.
