Cars was a massive blockbuster hit for Pixar when the franchise made its debut in 2006. The lead character Lightning McQueen (played by Owen Wilson) is a race car, however the first film was about how he came to understand values over and above winning races when he got lost in Radiator Springs. The second installment focused more on his tow-truck friend Mater, who goes on a spy mission. While the characters have been intriguing and so has the plot, the second film drifted a bit from McQueen's racing career. Pixar has now attended to it, and Cars 3 will definitely appeal to the racing driver inside you.
McQueen has been a successful car, but he is getting older. Newer, better and faster cars now pose a threat to him. But while he is told to retire and earn off of his legacy, Lightning decides to take up the challenge to gain back the lost respect. He is headed straight into a race with a very fast car called Jackson Storm (played by Armie Hammer). Cars 3 revolves around McQueen's training and making a comeback.
Jackson Storm seems to be a hybrid hyper car, something on the lines of a McLaren P1, Porsche 918 or the Ferrari La Ferrari, while maintaining the American muscle car appeal. He is much faster than Lightning McQueen, who is a NASCAR race car. This also brings attention on the onset of technologically advanced cars, and what is the fate of cars that rely on mechanical finesse, without the assistance from tech gadgets.
Many Cars 3 characters were created with inspiration drawn from real-life NASCAR drivers. The character River Scott is based on Wendell Scott, who was the first African-American to compete in NASCAR. Junior 'Midnight' Moon drew inspiration from Junior Johnson, a NASCAR legend who won over 50 races. (source: nesn)
There are many other characters in the film that are recognisable with cars as we know them, such as Lightning's girlfriend Sally Carrera, who is a Porsche 996-series, and the hippie character Fillmore is a Volkswagen Bus. The owner of Luigi's Casa Della Tires, Luigi, is a Fiat 500, and Sarge, a Willys Model jeep.
The film also features Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton who voices Hamilton, a voice command assistant to Cruz Ramirez - McQueen's trainer. All in all, we can say that this installment of Cars seems far more exciting than the previous films have been so far, as it promises "more speed, more horsepower, more of everything.."
