Honda USA has unveiled the fifth generation CR-V in Detroit, a completely new SUV instead of a facelift. The changes include an aggressive design, more power, new features and this product has been the key player in the American market since its launch in 1997 as it has clocked over four million deliveries since then.
The 2017 Honda CR-V features a 1.5 L, 4-cylinder, turbocharged petrol engine for EX and higher variants and the top-end LX trim gets 2.4 L four-cylinder engine. While the 1.5 L petrol motor produces 190 hp power and 288 Nm torque, the larger motor generates 184 hp and 244 Nm, both engines mated to a CVT automatic transmission. The fifth generation CR-V now rides on a new chassis which makes it 30 mm longer, 35 mm wider which translates into the better leg and shoulder room. The A-pillar is now thinner for better visibility.
Exteriors of the 2017 Honda CR-V features an automatic shutter grille system that helps reduce aerodynamic drag, on-board LED daytime running lights with optional LED headlights. Another convenience feature is the hands-free power tailgate, that opens the boot by waving the foot under the rear of the car. The CR-V gets a new instrument panel on the inside that features two new screens , a 7-inch touchscreen in the center and a colorful driver interface. Navigation system from Garmin, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and voice activated features. Along with this, the car gets dual-zone climate control, remote start and a rear charging socket.
In terms of safety, the SUV features a collision-mitigating braking, road-departure mitigation, adaptive cruise control, and lane-keeping assist, blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic monitor, electric parking brake and automatic high-beam headlights. When introduced in India, it is expected to come with both engine options. We would have loved to see a larger diesel engine for country though!
