The 2017 Skoda Octavia has been launched in India today at a starting price of Rs 15.49 Lakh ex-showroom Indian. Skoda has tried to keep the Octavia as fresh as possible over the years, and while it got its last update in 2013. Although earlier this year, Skoda had sneakily introduced an Onyx edition with some cosmetic touches like blacked out alloy rims. Instead of building a new car ground up, Skoda has used most of the mechanical bits from the outgoing model, while adding features and cosmetic touches to bring the Octavia at par with the competition. This means that the 1.4 TFSI, the 2.0 TDi, and the 1.8 TSI engine have been carried forward. The 2.0 TDI will be the only one to be available with the 6-Speed manual and DSG options. The Octavia’s aggressive 15.49 lakh ex-showroom price tag places it aggressively against the likes of the Hyundai Elantra, the Volkswagen Jetta, and the Toyota Corolla Altis. The new Octavia will receive some improvements in the handling department while retaining its ‘driver’s car’ characteristics. Most updates to the new car have been focused on cosmetic and safety and value adding features. Here are five of the most important features on the facelifted Octavia:
Set in a gloss piano black instrument, the updated 8-inch entertainment system will have phone sync through Apple Carplay, Android Auto, and Mirrorlink. For those who prefer the back seat, Skoda also has an app called Boss Connect, that allows you to take control of the infotainment system from your smartphone.
iBuzz and Hands-Free Parking
The Octavia also gets two very significant segment first features including iBuzz, which can detect a driver’s wariness levels. It also has a hands-free parking feature which controls the steering while you control the foot operated pedals allowing for parking in tight spaces with ease. Also included are Hill Hold Control, Multi-collision braking and best in class 8 airbags.
The Skoda Octavia facelift also gets ambient lighting, offering 10 different colors to go with your mood. Even the cooled glovebox can be customized to add to the ambient aesthetics
The Octavia gets a slightly improved track, which will benefit the ride and handling of the car. The 1.4 TFSI and the 2.0 TDI have been widened by 20mm while the 1.8 TSI has been widened by 30mm. Now although this will not be visible at first glance it will be evident when putting the car around corners. The 1.8 TSI will also get an independent rear suspension, exclusively, to improve handling characteristics.
Headlamps and Taillamps
The wide single unit headlamps at the front have been split into two, the LED DRLs run parallel to the headlamps interjected by a strip of the plastic bumper. In addition, the rear bumper also gets a cosmetic redo along with a new LED taillamp cluster.
