Zoomcar PEDL cycles

Zoomcar today has launched PEDL, a technology-enabled cycle sharing service. PEDL is currently present in Bangalore, Kolkata and Chennai. Zoomcar launched PEDL in order to provide individuals with a convenient, affordable as well as environment-friendly cycle sharing service for short trips in the city. PEDL will primarily serve local daily use such as grocery shopping, errand running, and the last mile commuting. PEDL was designed to complement Zoomcar’s existing car sharing business and is operating with 500 cycles in above-mentioned cities. PEDL will add about 10,000 cycles this year and is planning to expand further in 2018. The company's aim is to be present in every 50 to 100 metres in a city in certain areas. In Bangalore, the cycles are available at HSR Layout, while for Chennai the area is Besant Nagar and for Kolkata, it's Golf Greens.

Speaking on the PEDL launch, Greg Moran, CEO & Co-founder, Zoomcar, said “With the launch of our pathbreaking PEDL service, we are officially extending the Zoomcar platform into the realm of multi-modal urban mobility. We’re thrilled to inaugurate India’s first tech-enabled cycle sharing service that will offer a whole new level of convenience to citizens across Indian cities. There will also be some very special benefit PEDL benefits for our 30 lakh + existing Zoomcar customer base. In recent times, we’ve observed a huge market gap for trips shorter than 5 kms and we firmly believe that the cycle 2.0 is best positioned to serve these use cases. PEDL strongly compliments our core car sharing service as we continue to make a meaningful contribution to air quality improvement across Indian cities. At present, we’re speaking to various governmental bodies to craft policies and design urban infrastructure that will help ensure the responsible propagation of dockless cycle sharing across the country.”

PEDL cycles features aluminium frames and drum brakes, anti-slip chains, airless solid tyres, and height adjustable seats. The cycles are designed to support more than 24 months of intensive use and has low maintenance costs, claims the company. These cycles are built with smart locks which can be unlocked easily using a QR Code. All cycles are fitted with a multi-purpose basket. PEDL’s IoT stack is an extension of Zoomcar’s Cadabra IoT platform and includes real-time GPS tracking, solar battery charging and built-in alarms. The users just have to visit a PEDL location and can pay via Paytm. After using the cycles, they can drop them at any of the PEDL locations. The cycle rentals are priced at Rs 10 per half an hour.

PEDL also has the option for anyone to become a Host by allowing cycles to be placed at the individual’s residence. Enrolling as a Host is a seamless process as the PEDL team handles end-to-end onboarding coupled with ongoing remote cycle management.
