In a recent announcement by Bajaj Auto Ltd, the final name of the first sub 500 cc motorcycle was declared. It will be known as the Dominar 400 and the moniker will carry forward a product range of premium and large motorcycles that will be launched in future. Slated for launch on 15th December 2016, the Dominar 400's microsite has gone live. This proves that Bajaj is trying to become an aspirational product in the sub 500 cc segment and how the Dominar will boost sales of the brand for a premium segment in India. This case will be similar to the Austrian bike maker, KTM's entry in the country in 2012 when Bajaj Auto acquired 47 percent of the company's stake.
Powering the first sub-500 cc motorcycle from Bajaj will be a 373 cc petrol motor that is expected to generate 41 hp of power and 30 Nm of torque. We have already witnessed this engine doing duty in the KTM RC 390 and the Duke 390. That said, the state of tune might be different for the Dominar 400 as it has been categorised by Bajaj as a 'cruiser sport' motorcycle. This engine will come with a 6-speed transmission and ABS or Anti-lock Braking System is expected to be an option.
Earlier christened as the Bajaj Pulsar CS400, it was first showcased at the 2016 Auto Expo. The company chose to go with the name as Dominar as it means 'to dominate' in Spanish. The Dominar 400 is expected to be priced below Rs 2 lakh, ex-showroom and if introduced will be quite a value-for-money proposition, the motorcycle will not just do good sales numbers, but also stack up on the waiting period. But, the Indian bike maker has already forethought and the company started production of the bike on November 18, 2016. So, rest assured, the two-wheeler's deliveries would start as soon as the price is announced.
