With bike sales up 9%, worst could be over for Bajaj Auto

Bajaj Auto reported 9% growth in motorcycle sales and 49% growth in commercial vehicle sales, riding new permits, in July 2014, indicating that the worst could be over for the company, and that it would be looking at winning back lost domestic market share. Bajaj posted an overall 13% rise in total sales during July. The company is betting on the new Discover 150 to bring back the numbers and restore growth in the domestic market.

During last month, the company sold 2.67 lakh motorcycles, up 9% over what it sold in the same month last year. Commercial vehicle sales zoomed up 49% to 51,451 units with permits opening up in states such as Maharashtra. This took the company's total sales to 3.19 lakh units. Exports continue to have a major share in sales. July saw the company post its highest ever exports for any month. Total exports rose 54% to 1.69 lakh units. The company expects to touch the 200,000-unit-a-month mark in exports in the next couple of months.

There was a recovery in sales in July from the preceding months, when the company sold 2.62 lakh motorcycles and 43,263 commercial vehicles with total sales at 3.05 lakh units.

Total FY15 sales are now up 4% at 12.60 lakh units, with motorcycles sales at 11.06 lakh units and commercial vehicle sales at 1.53 lakh units.

Out of this, exports for the year have so far been at 6.11 lakh units. Exports have grown by 29% in the April -July period.
