Vedanta Resources on Friday appealed the Orissa governments inter-ministerial group (IMG) to make an immediate arrangement of bauxite for revival of its 1-million tonne Lanjigarh alumina plant, pending long-term raw material linkages. The London-based company has suggested that the smaller bauxite mines in the non-forest areas, now in the hand of the government, may be linked to the plant for early opening of the plant, which has been shut down due to want of bauxite since December 5. Our immediate concern is revival of the plant, which is bleeding us finanacially. We can think of long-term ore supply to the refinery later. The long-term ore linkage can be made within one and half-a-years, said Vedanta Aluminium president and COO, Dr. Mukesh Kumar. Pending the long-term supply linkage, the government should take steps for immediate availablity of bauxite for the Vedanta Aluminiums refinery, Mukesh Kumar said, adding that the company has suggested several options for making bauxite available immediately.

The IMG, headed by state finance minister Prasanna Acharya, on Friday met the representatives of aluminium and ferro alloys companies.
