Toyota has launched its long awaited contestant in the compact crossover segment christened as Etios Cross. Crossovers were a foreign concept just a couple of years back but came into attention in India with the launch of Skoda Fabia Scout in 2012 and later came the Volkswagen Crossover Polo. This is the third attempt in the segment in recent times and it seems that this segment has opened its gate for upcoming challenges. Toyota Etios Crossover was first unveiled in the February at the 2014 Indian Auto Expo and it has now joined the Etios clan with Etios sedan and Etios Liva hatchback.

Toyota Etios Cross has a unique design when it comes to exterior styling. It looks rugged with bold grille at the front and exclusive side cladding never seen before. The same grille is surrounded by silver finished bull bar with protective cladding and signature badge of the company sitting at the center.

Skid plates have also been added that provides extra protection. Some elements are inherited from sibling Liva hatch which include the headlight cluster which have integrated halogen lamps and courtesy lights. The bumper sports large air dam having fog lamps integrated with turn indicators at both the ends which give distinctive appeal to the front faade.

The side profile of the car is strong with wheel arch fenders and exclusively designed silver side cladding. The muscular look is enhanced by the pair of 10-spoke 15inch machined chromed alloy wheels while the door handles and ORVM are body colored that flow with the overall structure. Roof rails which are also silver colored have been added to enhance the style statement. Rear profile shares the design cues from Liva hatch with twin tail lamp cluster and the same silver treatment on the rear bumper as given in the front. The rear also gets roof spoiler augmenting the sporty nature.

The ground clearance (4mm greater due to the 15 inch wheels), wheelbase and turning radius are same in Etios Liva and Etios Cross. Overall, the car appears to be quite sporty and adventurous from outside.

Interior design is based on the Etios range of cars with different seating arrangement. The cabin has been adorned in piano black finishing with more refined looks coming from gloss and matte finishing. Premium quality upholstery and white stitching gives extra shine to the car. The furnishings on the seats have been embellished with Etios Cross logo which gives a unique identity to the car. The central console comes loaded with a number of equipments like advance AC unit, 2-DIN stereo system with Bluetooth, USB and Aux-In connectivity options and modern instrument panel. The steering wheel is wrapped in leather while the audio controls are mounted on the same for ease of access. On the safety front, the top end V and VD trims gets dual front airbags while Anti-lock braking system with Electronic Brake Force Distribution is standard in all except the base G variant.

Toyota Etios Crossover comes in three engine options, two petrol engines and one diesel engine which are already doing their duty in Liva hatch. The base model comes with 1.2L 4-cylinder DOHC petrol engine that produces 79hp and torque rated at 104Nm while the more powerful 1.5L engine with same DOHC technology is able to generate 89hp and 132Nm of peak torque. The diesel engine is a 1.4L D-4D engine with SOHC technology producing 67hp and 170Nm of max torque. All the three engines are paired with 5-speed manual transmission gearbox. Fuel economy of all the three engines is also pretty impressive.
