Compromise emerge on internet talks

Hopes rose on Wednesday for a compromise that would keep intrusive government regulation of the internet from being enshrined in a global treaty. As a 12-day conference of the International Telecommunication Union drew near its Friday closing, the chairman of the gathering in Dubai circulated a draft that sidelined proposals from Russia, China and other countries that have been seeking the right to know where each piece of Internet traffic comes from. The US believes it is the basis for any further progress toward reaching an agreement at this conference, said US Ambassador Terry Kramer, who led Western opposition to the earlier proposals.

Yahoos Mayer revamps email in first big move

Yahoo rolled out new versions of its popular web email on Tuesday, the first major product makeover since chief executive Marissa Mayer took the helm of the struggling internet company five months ago. Yahoo released new versions of its Yahoo Mail product for smartphones and tablets in keeping with Mayers focus on mobile devices and a revamped version of its web-based mail product for PC users that cuts out ancillary features and that the company said delivers faster performance. Youve told us loud and clear that you want fewer distractions when it comes to email. You want to quickly login, communicate, and get on with your day, Mayer said in a post.

Microsoft ups Surface production

Microsoft has stepped up manufacturing of the Surface tablet, its new device designed to counter Apples iPad, and will introduce it to third-party retailers this week. The moves suggest Microsoft is seeing some demand for its first own-brand computer in the crucial holiday shopping season, although it has yet to divulge any sales figures. The public reaction to Surface has been exciting to see, said Panos Panay, general manager of Microsofts Surface project, which forms part of the companys Windows unit. We have increased production and are expanding the ways in which customers can interact with, experience and buy Surface, Panay said.
