A day after being sworn-in as the head of a 45-member

coalition government, new Prime Minister Narendra Modi

distributed portfolios to his cabinet colleagues. Here's the list of 22 ministers of state along with their portfolios:

Independent Charge

* V K Singh, 63

Portfolio: Portfolios: Development of Northeast Region, MoS External Affairs and Overseas Indian Affairs


THIS ELECTION: The retired Army chief won by a margin of 5.67 votes from Ghaziabad constituency.

JOURNEY TO CABINET: Singh landed in a controversy over his age with the Centre. After retirement, he joined the anti-graft movement of Anna Hazare and addressed public meetings in different parts of the country. Later, he joined the BJP. According to sources, Singh also played a role in 1991 Bollywood movie Prahaar.


* Rao Inderjit Singh, 63

Portfolios: Planning and Statistics and Programme Implementation, MoS Defence

Ahir (Obc)

This Election: Contested and won from Gurgaon, defeating Zakir Hussain of the INLD by 2,74,722 votes.

Journey to Cabinet: Has been elected thrice to the Lok Sabha on a Congress ticket. Two months before the Lok Sabha elections, Singh quit the Congress after criticising Haryana CM Bhupinder Hooda and demanding a probe into land-grab allegations against Robert Vadra.

Previous ministerial record: Was MoS (External Affairs)and then MoS (Defence) in UPA-I. However, shared a cold relationship with defence minister A K Antony.

* Santosh Gangwar, 65

Portfolios: MoS Independent charge of Textiles, Parliamentary Affairs, Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation


THIS ELECTION: Contested from Bareilly, won by 2.40 lakh votes.

JOURNEY TO CABINET: He became an MP for the first time in 1989, and then went on to win consecutively in 1991, 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2004. He lost in 2009. Gangwar is founder chairman of Bareilly Urban Cooperative Bank. He was whip of party in Lok Sabha for two terms (1991-96 and 2004-2009), and is in-charge of BJP's national cooperative cell.

PREVIOUS MINISTERIAL RECORD: A five-time union minister, he has been in charge of petroleum thrice. He has held portfolios of petroleum, science and Technology, among others, in NDA.

* Shripad Naik, 61

Portfolio: Charge of Culture and Tourism

Bhandari (OBC)

This election: Won from North Goa by 1,05,599 votes.

Journey to Cabinet: Was Lok Sabha member thrice before. He started his election campaign with a controversy when he allegedly posed with a copy of the Bible in a church and was accused of using a religious symbol for campaigning.

Previous ministerial record: Was MoS in the previous NDA government and held the portfolios of agriculture, shipping, civil aviation, road transport and highways, finance (revenue).

* Dharmendra Pradhan, 45

Portfolio: MoS Petroleum and Natural Gas


This election: Did not contest; he is a Rajya Sabha MP from Bihar.

Journey to Cabinet: The national general secretary of the party, he has been in charge of key states such as Bihar, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand. With him as election in-charge of Bihar, the BJP and its allies bagged 31 seats.

Previous ministerial record: None.

* Sarbananda Sonowal, 51

Portfolio: Skill Development, Entrepreneurship and Sports ministries

Sonowal Kachari (st)

THIS ELECTION: Won from Lakhimpur in Assam by 2.92 lakh votes

JOURNEY TO CABINET: Once a student leader of Assam, later joined AGP and then BJP. It was Sonowals PIL in Supreme Court in 2005 that had led to striking down of controversial Illegal Migrants (Determination by Tribunals) Act. He was then an AGP MP


* Prakash Javadekar, 63

Portfolios: Information and Broadcasting and Environment, Forests, Climate Change, MoS Parliamentary Affairs


This Election: Is a Rajya Sabha member from Maharashtra.

Journey to Cabinet: National spokesperson for the party, he is the go-to man in the party for issues concerning Maharashtra.

Previous ministerial record: None. Has led task forces on IT.

* Piyush Goyal, 49

Portfolio: Power, Coal, New and Renewable Energy


This Election: Did not contest; he is a Rajya Sabha member from


Journey to Cabinet: A law graduate, a CA and an investment banker, Goyal is national treasurer of the BJP. He has been on the national executive of the party. He also headed the BJP's Information Communication Campaign Committee.

Previous ministerial record: None.

* Dr Jitendra Singh, 56

Portfolios: MoS in PMO, Science and Technology and Earth Sciences


THIS ELECTION: In his first-ever poll, defeated Congresss Ghulam Nabi Azad by 60,000 votes

JOURNEY TO CABINET: A professor of diabetes and endocrinology who has five books to his credit, he joined the BJP three years ago and has become a member of the BJP national executive. He is only the second BJP leader from J&K to become a minister at Centre.


* Nirmala Sitharaman, 54

Portfolios: Commerce and Industry Minister, MoS Corporate Affairs


THIS ELECTION: Did not contest; not a member of either House

JOURNEY TO CABINET: An alumnus of JNU, Delhi, she has worked for PricewaterhouseCoopers and BBC World Service in UK. After joining the BJP, she has served as member of the National Commission for Womaen.A director at Pranava Model School in Hyderabad.

* Manoj Sinha, 55

Portfolio: MoS Railways

Bhumiar Brahmin

THIS ELECTION: Sinha won from Uttar Pradesh's Ghazipur with a margin of 32,452 votes.

JOURNEY TO CABINET: This is Sinha's third term; he was elected to the Lok Sabha in 1996 and 1999. A civil engineer from BHU, he started his political career as the students' union president. Sinha is a member of BJP national council. He had lost the 2009 LS election from Ballia.


* Upendra Kushwaha, 54

Portfolios: MoS Rural Development, Panchyati Raj and Drinking Water and Sanitation

Koeri (OBC)

THIS ELECTION: The Rashtriya Lok Samata Party leader won from Karakat by more than 1 lakh votes

JOURNEY TO CABINET: The BJP joined hands with the former JD(U) leader for the Kushwaha votes. He was seen as handy to counter Kurmi votes. Was elected to the Bihar Assembly for the first time in 2000. While he became a Rajya Sabha MP in 2010, this is his first term in the Lok Sabha.


* G M Siddeswara, 61

Portfolio: MoS Civil Aviation


THIS ELECTION: Won from Davangere in Karnataka by over 17,000 votes, his third consecutive victory from seat

JOURNEY TO CABINET: He represents the Lingayats, who form the bulwark of the party's support base in Karnataka. With Lingayat leader B S Yeddyurappa losing out on account of the corruption cases against him, Siddeswara finds himself in.


* P Radhakrishnan, 62

Portfolio: MoS Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises


THIS ELECTION: Only BJP MP from Tamil Nadu, he won from Kanyakumari by 1.29 lakh votes

JOURNEY TO CABINET: Into his second consecutive term as state BJP chief, Pon Radhakrishnan is Pon R or Ponnar to his supporters. A lawyer, he joined the Hindu Munnani in 1990. While he failed to win in 1998, he was successful a year later as BJP and DMK aligned.

PREVIOUS MINISTERIAL RECORD: Was MoS in the Vajpayee government.

* Mansukbhai Vasava, 57

Portfolio: MoS Tribal Affairs



for the fifth time by 1.54 lakh votes.

JOURNEY TO CABINET: He is the only Lok Sabha MP from Gujarat to find a place in Modi's Cabinet. Having started his political career as a tribal rights champion, Vasava was deputy minister for tribal welfare in the first Keshubhai Patel government in 1995.


* Nihal Chand, 43

Portfolio: MoS Chemicals and Fertilizer

Meghwal (SC)

This election: MP from Ganganagar (Rajasthan)

Journey to Cabinet: Fourth time MP in the Lok Sabha, he is one of the youngest yet seniormost faces in the state.

A graduate in humanities, he hails from a strong political family and was initiated into active politics early in life.

Previous ministerial record: None.

* Krishan Pal Gurjar, 57


THIS ELECTION: Won from Faridabad by over 4.6 lakh votes, the highest victory margin in Haryana

JOURNEY TO CABINET: The first-time Lok Sabha MP is a former Haryana BJP chief and a veteran in state politics

PREVIOUS MINISTERIAL RECORD: Was Haryana transport minister.

* Sanjeev Balyan, 41


THIS ELECTION: Won from Muzaffarnagar by a margin of 4.01 lakh votes.

JOURNEY TO CABINET: Balyan, a veterinary doctor, joined the BJP two years ago. He is named in a Muzaffarnagar riots case and was lodged in jail for 15 days.


* Kiren Rijiju, 42

Portfolio: MoS Home


This Election: Won from Arunachal West by 41,738 votes.

Journey to Cabinet: A law graduate, this is his third term in the LS. Was last a member of the 14th Lok Sabha as a BJP member.

Previous ministerial record: Has never held a ministerial post, but was a member of the parliamentary standing committee on energy.

* Vishnu Dev Sai, 50

Portfolio: MoS Mines, Steel, Labour and Employment

This election: Won from Raigarh, Chhattisgarh, reserved for tribals

Journey to cabinet: Won for the fourth time from his constituency. He has been projected as a tribal face in the Modi ministry, but has rarely taken up their causes and is known more as a Raman Singh man

Previous ministerial record: Has never been a minister.

* Sudarshan Bhagat, 44

Portfolio: MoS Social Justice and Empowerment

This Election: Fought and won from Lohardaga by 6,489 votes.

Journey to Cabinet: Modi has overlooked Kariya Munda (an adivasi leader) and others such as Jayant Sinha and Nishikant Dubey in favour of Bhagat.

Previous ministerial record: The one-time MLA has held the portfolios of HRD, CM Secretariat, Department of Welfare.

* Rao Saheb Danve, 59

Portfolio: MoS Consumer Affairs Food and Public Distribution


This election: Won his fourth term as Lok Sabha MP when he defeated the Congress candidate in Jalna, Maharashtra, by 2,06,798 votes.

Journey to Cabinet: The Maratha leader and Munde loyalist has a strong presence in Jalna.

Previous ministerial record: None. Was member of committee on petroleum and natural gas.
