With its just introduced Revotron 1.2T, an indigenous turbocharged petrol engine, Tata Motors cherishes hopes of enriching its portfolio as well as its revenue. The engine is part of the Revotron series that, will power future models in the passenger vehicle market, says Tata Motors. Described as 'next-generation petrol engine', Revotron 1.2T will be used in the models that Tata will exhibit in the 2014 Auto Expo.

What does Tata Motors hope to achieve The objective is clear from the name of the engine itself Revotron an amalgamation of 'revolution' and the French word tronel, meaning balance'. Tata's venture with this engine is to bring a revolution in 'driving manoeuvrability' and maintain a balance in terms of power and fuel efficiency. The automobile industry, especially in India, has a special space for the vehicles that exhibit more power and consume less fuel. That's why most of Tata's vehicles with diesel engines have hit huge sales figures. If the Revotron Series engines do justice to the intention of the manufacturer, chances are quite high that there will be a revolution in the sales figures of the Tata Motors' vehicles.

Next, we look at the approach and the basics. Before the making of this engine, Tata Motors had taken into consideration the need and expectations of consumers who have been generally happy with its diesel engine vehicles. If not dissatisfied, they have not been similarly happy with Tata's petrol engine vehicles. The prime reason for the consumers' lack of interest in Tata Motors petrol vehicles is that they do not churn out as much power as its competitors deliver. Keeping this note in consideration, Tata Motors has developed the concept of the Turbocharged Intercooled Multi-point Fuel Injected (MPFi) Petrol Engine, Revotron 1.2T. The other engines of the Revotron Series will include 3-and 4-cylinder petrol engines to ensure excellent performance and superior fuel efficiency.

In addition to feedback from the car owners, auto enthusiasts and experts from various corners of the world, Tata Motors has also taken into consideration their driving habits followed by extensive testing in grueling climatic conditions in India as well as in countries like the UK and Korea. The company has received inputs from eminent global players in the fields of combustion, boosting, friction and calibration. It has also worked closely with AVL (Austria) and prime technology partners including Bosch, Honeywell, Mahle and INA. The purpose was to ensure that the best and latest technologies are used to develop the new-age petrol engine series that should be potent enough to bring a revolution.

A quick look at the 'revolution' as promised by Tata Motors shows that the company has categorized revolution from three perspectives performance, refinement and economy. Revotron 1.2T delivers 85PS @ 5000 RPM & 140 Nm @ 1750-3500 RPM. Tata Motors says, The modern water-cooled turbo-charger, with its low inertia wheel, provides a faster response for a flat, seamless segment-highest torque density, which is kicked in at the lowest RPM and delivered over a wide range of revolutions, feeding the vehicle with raw power continuously. This engine comes in a multi-drive mode and is rich with superior throttle response, advanced catalytic converter with reduced Toxic Emissions and Smart ECU (Electronic Control Unit), which justifies Tata Motors claim of revolution in terms of performance.

The lightweight and yet powerful engine features a stiffened crankcase that minimizes Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) for a refined output. With moderated intake and exhaust system and Smart ECU for precise control, the engine is also powered by wire technology for a refined drive experience. Its low viscosity and fuel efficient engine oil, optimized water-jacket, and head gasket with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) technology make it combustion efficient, reducing thermal inertia. Its 8-hole fuel injector further adds to its fuel efficiency, doing justice to Tata Motors claim about this engine being a revolution in terms of economy as well.

However, only time will tell if the Revotron 1.2T and the entire Revotron Series can live up to projected performance goals and sustain customer confidence.
