Police official C. Sudhakar said that 13 men have been arrested in connection with the case.
The state, ruled by Trinamool Congress' Mamata Banerjee, has seen a rash of crimes committed against women.
A rash of rapes and gang-rapes in India over the past year has sparked widespread outrage over chronic sexual violence in India and government failures to protect women.
The West Bengal case is particularly troubling because the alleged gang-rape apparently was sanctioned by a council made up of village elders. Such councils are not legally binding in India, but they are seen as the will of the local community. Those who flout the councils risk being ostracized.
The woman was in a hospital in the state's Birbhum district where doctors said her condition was serious.

Condemning the gang-rape of a tribal woman in Birbhum district, West Bengal Governor M K Narayanan today said the accused should be arrested and given corporal punishment.
The 20-year-old tribal woman is in a critical condition after being gang-raped by 13 persons allegedly on the orders of a kangaroo court of tribals who were incensed by her relationship with a boy belonging to another community.
"We should have them (culprits) arrested and corporal punishment should be given to them," Narayanan told reporters when asked about his reaction to the incident.
In their complaint, the woman's family said the incident happened after a meeting of community leaders who decided to "punish" her for having a relationship with a boy outside her community.
Apart from the 13 locals who have been slapped with charges of gang-rape and causing grievous injury to a woman, the youth with whom the girl reportedly had an affair has also been arrested.
