PSUs queue up at private B-schools

Public sector units (PSU) across industry verticals are queuing up at private business schools for short-term management development programmes (MDP) to hone their skills in various disciplines of management. Consider this: Gurgaon-based Management Development Institute (MDI) offers more than 150 programmes per year, of which almost 75% are for PSUs or direct government departments like Bharat Electronics Limited, LIC, NTPC, BSNL and Geological Survey of India (GSI), among others.

Same is the case with the Institute of Management Technology (IMT) Nagpur, which has conducted short duration programmes for NTPC, SAIL, GSI and Power Grid in the last one year in areas like management of change, creating effective teams, soft skills and finance for non-finance managers for senior management of these agencies.

These MDPs can be for a duration of 3 days to 6 months, especially for the armed forces who seek change or short services officers seeking a career in the corporate world. The private sector may or may not continue their engagement with us due to budgetary constraints but PSUs are not affected by the economic conditions, said Prof S Chatterjee, dean, faculty and special initiatives, MDI Gurgaon, which trains 3,000 executives every year. The B-schools armed forces programme gets 30 students every year.

Institutes have a discussion with these agencies to gauge their deficiency areas and requirements. Because a three-day programme is very focused, institutes urge the executives to stay on campus during the training, at the end of which they get a participation certificate.

As per Prof SK Palekar, chairperson PGEMP at the SP Jain Institute of Management and Research (SPJIMR), PSU companies need their employees to be trained for highly competitive environment. The institutes partner companies are SBI, HPCL and BPCL.

All companies need to fill their leadership pipeline, which means their leaders have to take over the next bigger role. These programmes continuously develop executives to take up senior positions as senior managers want to learn general management, he added.
