Google may have underestimated demand for its flagship Nexus 5 phone, as it ran out of stock within hours of listing for sale in India. Shortly after the devices went on sale, the Google Play Store displayed the message: We are out of stock. Please check back soon. Nexus 5 is the first device powered by the Android 4.4 Kit Kat operating system. The 16 GB model of Nexus 5 is available for R28,999, while the 32 GB model costs R32,999. Powered by Qualcomms Snapdragon 2.26 GHz processor, the handset has a 4.95-inch screen, 8 MP rear camera, 1.3 MP front camera, wireless charging and supports 4G/LTE.

The Nexus 5 and Kit Kat software underscore Googles ambition to ingrain its search engine and virtual assistant, Google Now, even deeper into peoples lives. In the process, Google hopes to gather more insights that will enable it to sell more advertising, which generates most of its revenue.

The new phones R28,999 price threatens to lure more cost-conscious consumers away from Apples iPhone, which retails for R53,500 for the 5S and R41,900 for the 5C.
