The Congress Wednesday said it suspected a government hand behind the allegation by former Supreme Court judge Markandey Katju that former CJI R C Lahoti had granted extension to an additional judge of the Madras High Court, who was facing corruption charges, at the instance of the then UPA government.

The party saw an attempt by the government to humiliate the Supreme Court collegium to create an impression that they are succumbing to pressures, they are not impartial or they are giving favour to certain individuals. Congress spokesperson Shakeel Ahmed also said Katjus allegation against the political leaders seems to be based on hearsay.

The UPA also wanted that there should be more transparency in the appointments of judges but not by humiliating the collegium, Ahmed said. He claimed the BJP was against the effort of the UPA government to introduce a transparent method for the appointment of judges.

There are insinuations in the media and in political circles that very important and very influential people in the political party, some friends in the government, are behind all this . There are allegations in the media that he is doing all this to get the second term as chairman of the Press Council of India, he said.
