Thomas Yarnavick was sentenced yesterday after he pleaded guilty to beating Jailall Singh last year with the metal footrest of the wheelchair following an argument in their shared room in the Queens nursing home, the New York Times reported.
Queens District Attorney Richard Brown called Singh's death "particularly senseless and disturbing".
"With his guilty plea, the defendant has taken responsibility for his actions and the sentence meted out by the court ensues that justice is served," Brownsaid in a statement.
Yarnavick shared the room in the nursing center with Singh.
The two got into an argument in October last year over whether to close the sectional curtain thatdivided their quarters.
An angry Yarnavick removed the footrest from another wheelchair and used it to repeatedly beat Singh in the head.
Singh died within hours of the attack.
Yarnavick, who was described by officials as a frail man in a wheelchair with no prior signs of violence, disposed of the footrest in a laundry hamper, where it was discovered by the police.
Yarnavick had been held without bail since his arrest and arraignment in November.
He had pleaded guilty to manslaughter charges in May.
