The BJP-led government at the Centre with an absolute majority now was not long ago a party with just two MPs. And Congress, which is now reduced to just 44 seats can emerge with 440 seats, in the future. We are all bound by the democracy where people exercise their rights, Sankaranarayanan told a select media gathering at Sahyadri, the state government guesthouse in Mumbai.
Drawing attention to the Assembly bypoll results in Bihar and Karnataka, the former Governor pointed out that people cannot be taken for granted in a democracy. Its there for everybody to see the development and the way things are headingPolitics is not just about numbers; irrespective of the numbers, both the state and Centre have coalition governments, he added.
Earlier, I had raised objections as certain norms which are sacrosanct to the constitutional post were not adhered to. The protest was not related to whether I should resign or not, but the improper procedure, he said. The former Governor, however, said there cannot be any distinction between governors of Maharashtra and a smaller state, Mizoram. In the past, I have been the Governor of Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and was happy. It was my decision to resign after receiving the order of transfer from the President of India, he said.
The senior Congress leader is gearing up for a new innings in politics in his home state Kerala. I have decided to go back to politics and continue my social work. I will be leaving for Kerala tomorrow, he said.
I dont think the decision to transfer me to Mizoram was out of political vendetta. However, if someone draws such an inference, I have nothing to say. After all, everybody has the right to draw their own conclusion or read between the lines.
Sankaranarayanan, who played a pro-active role in Maharashtra, often taking positions on critical issues such as the irrigation scam or staying the CBI prosecution against former CM Ashok Chavan said, I had a lot of work to do as the governor and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
He justified his decision on Ashok Chavan saying, Yes, I went through the file and found there was no sufficient evidence to allow the prosecution against Ashok Chavan in the Adarsh Cooperative Housing caseEven the CBI accepted the decision.
Dismissing any political compulsion, he said, As the governor, I had been objective and fair.
