The Indian Cotton Federation (ICF) has projected a figure of 325 lakh bales (of 170 kg each) for the 2012-13 crop season. The estimate is based on the data collected from various production centres, after factoring in the drought in Gujarat and accounting for Andhra Pradesh estimates, which are likely to be bettered marginally.

According to estimates, Gujarat is likely to be the leading producer with an estimated 85 lakh bales, followed by Maharashtra with 80 lakh bales. Punjab, Rajasthan and Haryana are likely to produce 57 lakh bales between them, while Andhra Pradesh is likely to exceed its crop yield to 68 lakh bales. Madhya Pradesh is expected to produce around 16 lakh bales while Karnataka is likely to spin out 11 lakh.

Orissa and Tamil Nadu are expected to be the smallest producers, ICF pointed out.
