Introduction of bullet trains starting off with the Mumbai-Ahmedabad sector is on the anvil. "It is the wish and dream of every Indian that India runs a bullet train as early as possible. Indian Railways is on its way to fulfil that long cherished dream," Railway Minister Sadananda Gowda said while presenting the Rail Budget.

Here are a few facts how the bullet train dream stakes up:


Fastest train on 491-km corridor is Mumbai Central-Ahmedabad Shatabdi Express. Top speed 130 km/hr; takes 6 hrs, 45 minutes. Chair Car fare: Rs 960


At over 350 km/hr speed, journey could potentially be over in under 2 hrs.


High Speed Rail Corporation created last year to bring in investments. 18-month pre-feasibility study funded by Japan currently on.


Corridor estimated to cost upwards of

Rs 60,000 cr; internal calculations show one-way ticket could cost over Rs 5,000.


First bullet trains in Japan; high-speed services currently operational in Europe, Japan, China, Korea, Taiwan. Best known: Japanese Shinkansen, Chinese Harmony CRH380A, French TGV.
