Though the movie got mixed reviews, it has been doing well at the box office.
Indian Express' critic Shubhra in her review gave the movie three stars and said: "For the most part, I enjoyed Madras Caf."

Madras cafe has performed well overseas collecting AED 1.3 million in the UAE and other Gulf countries.

The film is based on the events leading up to Rajiv Gandhi's assassination. Madras Cafe also stars Rockstar actress Nargis Fakhri as a war correspondent.
