Speaking on the sidelines of an MoU signing ceremony between Ford India and Ennore Port on Tuesday, MA Bhaskarachar, chairman and MD, Ennore Port (EPL) said, The port is awaiting the cabinet committee on economic affairs approval, which is expected anytime after January 27.
The new container termin-al with a quay length of 730 m will have a capacity to handle 1.40 million TEUs per annum. The container terminal project will be on design, build, finance, operate and transfer basis for a 30-year concession period.
Bhaskarachar said during the last few years, the Ennore port has been growing substantially with a number of projects being undertaken. In the past few years, our cargo grow-th has been around 60% and we are now looking at growing our Exim trade further by looking for long-term user agreement as well as captive cargo arrangement, he said.
According to Union minister of shipping GK Vasan, the container terminal will be one of the three important projects which will be taken up the port, which is planning to increase its capacity to 66.8 million tonne per annum (mtpa) by the end of the 12th Five Year Plan. The other projects include the R4,500-crore LNG terminal by Indian Oil Corp and a coal berth of 9 mtpa for Tamil Nadu Electricity Board on captive basis.
Ennore Port has developed a general cargo-cum-car terminal at a cost of Rs 140 crore.
