For two days, a high-level brainstorming session of Congress office-bearers was held in Srinagar where the state leaders said the party should contest the Assembly elections on its own. The final decision will be, however, taken by AICC chief Sonia Gandhi.
The party has decided to contest elections alone. We have decided that the party will not forge any alliance with the NC or PDP before the Assembly polls, said a senior Congress leader who was at the meeting attended by AICC general secretary and party in-charge of J&K Ambika Soni, former CM Ghulam Nabi Azad and JKPCC chief Saifuddin Soz.
At the meeting, a majority of the Congress legislators said any pre-poll alliance might hit the prospects of the party and benefit the BJP.
After losing all six Lok Sabha seats in the state, the relations between Congress and ally NC have got strained.
The ministers, however, asked the party to continue its coalition with the NC till the Assembly completes its full term. Sources said the party had decided to project Azad or Soz as its chief ministerial candidate.
