Tension has been brewing between the workers and the management for sometime even as negotiations are underway for a new wage agreement. The delay in the wage agreement has added to the strained relations.
In a note addressed to Bajaj Auto MD Rajiv Bajaj, Pawar alleged the management had refused to meet trade union leaders. Last year, Bajaj Auto workers stopped work after talks with the management for a wage review failed. Pawar said the workers had returned to work after their 50-day strike on the assurance that the management would talk to them after they restored production.
We are negotiatiing for review of out wage. The process has been going on for more than five months. Inflation is high and hence it is very difficult for workers to manage, he said.
The Bajaj management is consistently taking unfair action against workers at its Chakan plant and it has refused to review increments as per the settlement dated May 21, 2010. Therefore, the union has no option but to terminate the long-term settlement. Against the said termination letter, the management went to court, he said. Pawar alleged that the management had started giving impossible production targets with the objective of taking action against union members. Hence, the union has demanded A scientific time study based on ILO norms.
