Chhatra Yuva Sangharsh Samiti (CYSS), the student wing of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), might contest the upcoming Panjab University Campus Student Council elections (PUCSC) in September. A meeting regarding this was held at the Students Centre, PU, on Saturday.

AAP National Executive Committee member, Gulkirat Kaur Panag, who had contested the Lok Sabha elections from the city, was also present in the meeting, with the members of AAPs student wing.

Largely consisting of students preparing for civil services examinations, and those from the professional courses, CYSS was formally launched in February. According to the members, it initially started off with a group of 20 students, who were disenchanted by the working of other student organisations on the campus.

When questioned about the PUCSC elections, Panag said, It is too premature to say anything at this stage because it is yet to be decided whether CYSS will be the electoral student wing of the party or not. Deliberations are on. However, she made it clear what the agenda of the student wing would be. We want to get hooliganism and criminalisation out of student elections, and have clean governance instead, said Panag.

Elaborating on the details of the meeting, Aman Jawandha, one of the CYSS members, said, It was decided in the meeting that a committee of CYSS will be formed, which will hold a meeting next week to take the final call on contesting the elections.

Jawandha highlighted that if AAPs student wing decides to contest the elections, then it will strictly adhere to the Lyngdohs code of conduct. However, if we decide not to contest, then the CYSS will act as a watchdog, and will protest against other the student organisations which will not abide by the code of conduct. The CYSS will ensure that fair student elections are held, he added.
