Eleven persons were injured, one of them seriously, when a gas holder attached to one of Tata Steels basic oxygen furnaces, better known as LD plant, at its works in Jamshedpur exploded around 3:30 pm on Thursday.

A company spokesperson said that the injuries sustained by the victims were mechanical caused by splinters originating from the exploded gas holder.

All the victims have been removed to the nearby Tata Main Hospital where the condition of one of them is said to be serious.

The one in serious condition has been admitted to the critical care unit of the hospital. The spokesperson said that the area around the accident site has been isolated and that the rest of the (steel) plant is running smoothly.

Other sources said that the gas holder described to be containing LD gas which exploded had been of 83,000 cubic meter capacity and that the explosion resulted in the gas pipeline around the LD plant catching fire. Half a dozen fire tenders of Tata Steel as well as of the government took around three hours to gain control over it.

While some of the 11 injured are employees of Tata Steel the rest are said to be labourers belonging to contractors working inside the plant. Details as to how the explosion took place as well as the identity of those injured are awaited.
