The collapse of the talks on the special safeguard mechanism (SSM) at the WTO Doha Round negotiations in Geneva was unfortunate (The end, for now, Jul 31).The SSM was agreed at the Hong Kong Ministerial of 2005. The opposition to the SSM from countries like the US reflects their vested interests. Their insistence on applying SSM only at a higher rate of import surge is not acceptable as this will affect poor farmers in developing countries. Besides, the demand will defeat the very purpose of introducing the SSM. Despite the talks failure, WTO should not give up on the SSM.

Rule of mockery
President Medvedev has every reason to feel dejected (Medvedev frustrated by Russias slow reforms, Aug 1). Under Vladimir Putin, rule of law was mocked, not fortified, in Russia.
